City Poem -Neha
अज़ान - worship of god in mosque
Door
Kurta plazo
कोसमेटिक - cosmetic, make up
Delicious

DeleteHey Neha! Your city poem is a visually evocative one. The first couplet presents a unique idea- the individual wakes up to/at the sound of the morning azan the way gods wake up to/at the sight of the surya namaskar, waking up could also mean a spiritual awakening. The idea in the second couplet of the bazaar being located in the mehfil instead of the expected vice-versa is a very interesting inversion- indeed there are so many crisscrosses in the city that it is hard to extricate the private from the public as the latter intrudes upon the former. What does 'namkeen' mean as an attribute of sharara? A suggestion- I see constant juxtapositions here- between the past and present, tradition and modernity, etc but primarily between Hinduism and Islam (except the 5th couplet which uses a symbol of Sikhism)-you could explore other religious identities and histories too, give Delhi a more varied representation. Further look at the limitations of living in Delhi- crime, squalor etc- even if you wish to give a positive spin to it. After all not all is hunky-dory in the capital, is it?

Namkeen sharara which I have written because of shine . I have usually seen in market that every and each girl wore in most of the occassion. And that area of chandni chowk shish ganj and red fort - i had to go there many times, beacause of my other participation during 15 August and Nagar kirtan of silkhi by khalsa school . but it's good tha your idea is differeny of my perception for my poem . i will think towards it..Thanks again...
I like your poem. There is a contradiction seen in your first verse of the poem and how it develops toward the end showcasing history or the description of the city. Specially i liked your starting line.

DeleteNeha! the cultural and religious markers of the Delhi-6 area is lyrically presented by you. A person who has never been to the city could imagine what Delhi 6 is like through the images reflected in this poem. A city is created by the culture, religion, and ideologies of its people. You have successfully traced the influence of different cultures, in the city along with the challenges present in it (issues with "modernity" in physical city space and the inner cultural state of the city).
ReplyDeleteThanks preeti.
