Other Poem 3: Arundhati Bhande

Babai and Aaji
- Arundhati Bhande

82 year old Babai
Smiling through the day
With all her teeth still intact
32 to be exact

"I don't have a disease
Just some pain in my knee
The doctor's prescribed surgery"

One day before the surgery
She's packing for the hospital stay
Still wearing her nicest saree,
still kneeling down to pray

"I am not scared of anything
I can walk it to the hospital wing
My heart still has songs to sing"

My mother's mother, my Aaji,
passed away, she was on her way
to pluck raw cotton from her farm
with a sharp pain in her arm

Fell down to the ground
Fear never gripped her sound
The hospital was too far
It stings us like an open scar

Women in my family
Have fought tooth and nail
With grit intertwined in their braid
Lucky I am, to grow under their shade

(Note: Babai means father's mother in our family. Baba (father)+ Aai (mother)= Babai (father's mother) in Marathi)

  1. Girl! I felt your poem. I have been trying to write a poem about my grandparents, since the day this course began. But I have failed so many times. You have beautifully captured the simplicity of your Grandma(s) along with complexity of cultural, gender, and regional identity. Your poem is a great help for me.

    Congrats!!
