Response Poem 1: Jasmine
(Response to: "The Previous Occupant")
Home
The closer I get
to home
the lighter my body feels
The air in this home
is heavy
The tension built in rooms
has seeped into the walls
That's why
home suffocates
me sometimes
home is holding together
so much history
Despite all that has happened here
the effects are minimal
But I notice them.
The family portrait
tilts,
no matter how many times I straighten it
it tilts
when I am not looking.
The air in this house is heavy
but here is where
I can collapse and fly
I know this air will hold me.
the rotating fan makes strange sounds now
is it pain, I wonder?
no one calls the repair-man
"Just let her rest a while."
we say.
Slipping behind the curtain
I watch things only home is allowed to witness
I have imagined angels on this ceiling
- and lovers on these windows.
Within the walls of home
is limitless space
Dear home,
you are proof
of my existence.
Home
The closer I get
to home

The air in this home

The tension built in rooms
has seeped into the walls
That's why
